Raised in the Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco, London worked in government after college. She was elected to the Board of Supervisors in the year 2012 (taking office in January 2013) and elected its president in the year 2015. As president of the Board, London, according to the city charter, became the acting mayor of San Francisco following the death of Mayor Ed Lee. She worked in this role from December 12, 2017, to January 23, 2018.
London won the San Francisco mayoral special election held on June 5, 2018. She is the first black woman, the second black person after Willie Brown, and the second woman after Dianne Feinstein to be elected mayor of San Francisco. London was sworn in as mayor on July 11, 2018.
